Our Story

A Journey Fueled by Flavor

It all started in Toronto, where a bright food truck called The Cuban Thing rolled out with one mission: bring the soul of Havana to the streets of Canada. With its sizzling sandwiches and Miami-style flair, it quickly became a local favorite.

Five years later, fueled by love (and a lot of Cuban coffee), the dream grew. A second truck (Tropical South) hit the road, serving up even more flavor and fun. “We brought something different — the customers loved it — and now, we’ve expanded to better serve the community,” says Chef Chuchi with a grin.

Tropical South became a sensation, serving up crave-worthy favorites like the El Cubano, the authentic Miami Smash Burger, and the signature Guava Chicken — all inspired by traditional recipes with a tropical flair.

Behind the flavor is Chef Chuchi Rivero, a Cuban-born, Miami-raised (with plenty of Hialeah spice) self-taught chef and award-winning cinematographer. After 40 years in Florida’s film and TV industry, including directing MasterChef Latino and working alongside world-renowned chefs, he decided it was time to tell his own story through food.

Alongside his wife and partner Patricia Salazar (Canadian-born, Panamanian-influenced, and the heart behind the scenes) the duo has built something truly special: a blend of culture, creativity, and culinary passion.

Now, their journey has come full circle, back to Florida, where it all began. Nestled in sunny Stuart, Old Havana Café is their latest chapter, a place where Cuban roots, Miami energy, and global inspiration come together on every plate.

Because no matter where the road leads great flavor always finds its way home.
